Christmas 2016 brought significant rains to northern South Australia, sending a surge of coffee-coloured water down the rivers and creeks. Although these rain events are always welcome, they regularly wash away the stock fences that cross the waterways. I spent a week repairing fences in the stifling heat whilst the station dogs enjoyed the rare opportunity to play in the water. Mounds of leaf litter accumulated along the creek banks in an intricate tangle of leaves, twigs and bark.
