"Flat Out Like A Lizard Sunbaking" is an unusual piece for me as it is more an amalgamation of ideas rather than one solid concept. As one of my Grounded Series in part it speaks of my connection to the earth and nature to which I have always been closely aligned.
On a recent trip to the Flinders Ranges in South Australia I was struck by the number of animals that had met with an unfortunate end on the roads of this vast area. Through the horror of the bloody vision regularly encountered I was surprised to also discover a solemn beauty left behind in the form of the bones, hence the idea of the animal skull theme.
Having moved to Australia from South Africa around five years ago I also wanted to express my gratitude for my new home and include an Aussie flavour in some of my art but wanted to present it in a more quirky manner.
Finally the title is inspired by that well known Aussie saying adding a little outback humour to my painting. My piece was now complete!
