Perpetual Salutation is my tribute to all of those old black and white and sepia photos from the wonderful old fashioned box brownie cameras and to all of those fabulous and timeless classic black and white silent movies. How things have changed over the decades. Viewing something without colour stimulates us tp use our imagination and create the colours we don’t see. Removing colour from a portrait has us viewing the subject on an emotional level. We tend to see the subjects face and read into the eyes without any distractions around them.
My use of grey which lends itself as a cool, neutral and balanced colour. It’s associated with dull and dingy but is also renowned for its conservatism and sophistication.
The whites used are associated with light, goodness and purity and often considered to be the colour of perfection. As opposed to grey, white usually has a positive connotation.
The creams in this piece suggest quietness, calm and relaxing.
