The Depression era was a time of hardship everywhere though less so in Queensland. That government was the only state to have insurance against such an event. So they made public works for men only and paid them for 3 days a week. The road climbing up from the Sunshine Coast is one such road. Hot, hard work in the most beautiful setting and with the typical touch of larrikinism among the crew. The new boy on the job brought hat and planned to keep his shirt clean so worked in his singlet. The crew boss let him do that for a while then relented and tossed him a spare hat. My aim was to capture all the elements in a very Aussie painting.
