The Journey South is an ongoing panorama series of gum trees and bush landscape. It is a numbered series, painted in groups; each painting has a number and a group number. Each painting is numbered and signed on the back edge of canvas, noting group number and date. Each of the groups also join and sit well with each other, due to the overall design of the repetition of shadows and horizon lines, so that the painting can extend over large wall spaces, or sit alone in a small place.
This piece is the central painting in the first group of the series.
This is my country. It is landscape that I have recognised in a few places in Australia, and each time I see it, it gives me a feeling of home.
This composition feels like music, a song, when I am painting; it is a series of rhythms in different values and tones and brush mark, especially in painting the negative space of the leaves and branches over the underpainting of burnt sienna.
